UFA Challenges

If u want a good start; look at the activity that you’re planning and decided what bit of it you want to make challenging. Where is the Young Person gaining a life experience or a skill? You don’t want to set a challenge just for the sake of it, look at a challenge as if you were planning a journey. You set yourself goals that you plan to achieve by the end.

Setting a challenge

Try and make sure the challenge is linked to your event; it can be one big challenge or made up of small challenges as long as they are relevant and within reason.

Be sensitive to everybody’s needs and ability in the group of participants.

Make sure the duration of the challenge is achievable.

Make sure the challenge is clearly explained and defined when actioning the challenge do it in a fun location.

When explaining your challenge make sure that positive language is used to make it inspiring and encouraging.

After setting the challenge work individually to set personal goals, encourage your participants to set their own targets.

Make sure that your challenge is memorable and can be easily reflected on.

Achieving a challenge

To achieve the challenge ensure that the goals are within reach.

Use group activities to gain goals and bring people closer together.

Asking questions about the challenge is a good thing and means they are thinking about their goals.

Show continues praise and guidance for good achievement; participants will need support when overcoming a challenge.

Documenting a challenge

Use creative resources to monitor progress e.g. Flipchart, post it’s, racoon circuits.

Use group activities to share people’s thoughts and feelings.

This may seem like evaluation but the creative side will make it more fun. Enjoy!
